Memphis Public Interest Law Center (CIT) is a public interest law firm seeking a staff attorney to provide civil legal representation to Latino and Hispanic victims of domestic violence, asalto sexual, dating violence, stalking and related crimes in the Memphis area.
The attorney will be responsible for handling proceedings in various areas of the law, including but not limited to: órdenes de protección, divorce, child custody, manutención de los hijos, landlord-tenant disputes, y, consumer matters.
The attorney will be responsible for all aspects of case management and litigation, from intake to conclusion of the representation.
The attorney will work closely with MPILC’s Executive Director and with MPILC’s partner agencies to ensure client needs are being met and grant requirements are being adhered to, and to develop systems to meet those needs efficiently and to the highest standard.
• Licensed attorney in Tennessee at the time the application is submitted
• At least 3 years of litigation experience, with one year of relevant experience in the area of family law, domestic and/or sexual violence, or gender issues
• Knowledge and understanding of the dynamics and impact of domestic violence
• Demonstrated commitment to social justice and to working with underserved communities
• Self-starter and an independent thinker
• Excellent writer
Preference will be given to an attorney with Spanish language proficiency and experience working with Latino and Hispanic populations and/or survivors of domestic violence.
This position is grant funded for three years and is currently funded at 70% time. Additional funding is being sought to fund the position at 100% time. While the position is funded at 70% time, the attorney will be expected to work 28 hrs./wk. Once full funding is secured, the attorney will be expected to work 40 hrs./wk. The full-time salary is $50,000. A monthly health insurance stipend is also provided. Both forms of compensation are paid commensurate with the rate of funding.
